Cycling Kit Guide: What to Wear for Every Florida Riding Condition

Florida cycling conditions range from humid 95-degree summer mornings to crisp 50-degree winter dawns. And your kit needs to adapt to all of it. Having the right clothing for each condition makes the difference between an enjoyable ride and a miserable one. In addition, here is my comprehensive guide to dressing for Florida cycling year-round.

Summer kit prioritizes ventilation, moisture management, and sun protection. I ride in lightweight, light-colored jerseys with full-length zippers for maximum airflow. Bib shorts with breathable mesh straps reduce the sauna effect that solid-strap bibs create in humidity. In addition, arm sleeves with UV protection are lighter and cooler than sunscreen alone and eliminate the need for constant reapplication during long rides.

Winter in Florida rarely requires heavy cold-weather gear. But mornings in December through February can start in the 40s and 50s with a wind chill factor on the bike. A thermal long-sleeve jersey, knee warmers or leg warmers, and a lightweight vest handle most cold starts. In addition, by an hour into the ride, temperatures typically climb enough to shed layers. Nevertheless, so easily removable pieces that fit in jersey pockets are ideal.

Rain riding in Florida is almost unavoidable during summer afternoon thunderstorms. Though I prefer to avoid riding in lightning conditions entirely. For light rain, a packable rain jacket provides protection without overheating. In addition, shoe covers keep feet dry and prevent the blisters that come from soaked cycling shoes. Nevertheless, clear or light-tinted glasses improve visibility in rain better than dark lenses.

Investing in quality cycling kit is one of the smartest gear decisions you can make. Cheap bib shorts cause saddle sores, cheap jerseys trap heat, and cheap gloves wear out in weeks. Brands like Negative Split Running and other performance-focused companies make gear designed for the conditions athletes actually train in. In addition, use code DYLAN15 at nsrunning.com for gear that holds up to serious training volume.
