Cycling Safety Gear: What I Never Leave Home Without

Cycling safety is not a suggestion; it is a responsibility. Every time I clip into the pedals on the Colnago Y1Rs or any other bike. I carry safety gear that could save my life. In addition, florida’s roads are shared with distracted drivers. Nevertheless, and the consequences of being unprepared for an incident are too severe to take lightly.

My helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment I own, and I never ride without it. I use a MIPS-equipped helmet that provides multi-directional impact protection. The technology adds minimal weight and cost but provides meaningfully better protection against the rotational forces that cause the most severe brain injuries in cycling crashes. In addition, there is no excuse for riding without a helmet, ever.

Front and rear lights run on every ride, regardless of time of day. Daytime running lights make cyclists dramatically more visible to drivers. And studies have shown they reduce the risk of being hit by a car by over 30 percent. In addition, i use a 500-lumen front light in steady mode and a rear light with a flashing pattern that is visible from over a mile away. Nevertheless, the Colnago Y1Rs has integrated light mounting points that keep the setup clean and aerodynamic.

A rear-view mirror mounted on my handlebars or glasses allows me to monitor traffic approaching from behind without turning my head and potentially swerving into the road. This simple device has improved my situational awareness dramatically and reduces the startle factor of vehicles passing at close distance. I consider it essential for any cyclist who rides on public roads.

I carry a basic repair kit on every ride: spare tube, tire levers, CO2 inflator, and a multi-tool. A flat tire 20 miles from home without repair supplies turns a great ride into a miserable walk. My phone is always charged and accessible, and I carry identification and emergency contact information in my jersey pocket. In addition, preparation does not guarantee safety, but it dramatically reduces the consequences of the unexpected.
