Florida rain is different from rain anywhere else. Afternoon thunderstorms arrive with little warning, drop torrential rain for 30 minutes, and disappear just as quickly. Learning to read the weather, make smart decisions. In addition, and ride safely in wet conditions is essential for any Florida cyclist who does not want to lose half their training days during summer.
My rule is simple: rain is rideable, lightning is not. If thunder is audible or lightning is visible, I do not ride. Period. In addition, no training session is worth the risk of being the highest point on a flat road during an electrical storm. Nevertheless, i check radar before every ride and carry my phone to monitor developing weather during longer sessions. When storms approach, I seek shelter immediately.
Wet road riding requires specific technique adjustments. Braking distances increase significantly on wet pavement. So I add extra following distance in group rides and start braking earlier for turns and stops. In addition, cornering grip is reduced, so I keep the bike more upright through turns and reduce lean angle. Nevertheless, painted road markings, metal manhole covers. And railroad crossings become extremely slippery when wet and should be crossed as straight and upright as possible.
Tire selection and pressure adjustments improve wet weather safety. Lower tire pressures increase the contact patch, providing better grip on wet surfaces. Wider tires, like the 28mm setup on my Colnago Y1Rs, provide inherently more grip than narrow tires. In addition, tire compounds designed for wet grip exist in premium tire lines, and the investment is worthwhile for year-round Florida riders.
Post-rain bike maintenance prevents the corrosion and wear that Florida humidity accelerates. After a wet ride, I dry the bike thoroughly, re-lubricate the chain, check brake pad condition. And wipe down all metal surfaces. In addition, salt air combined with rain moisture creates a corrosive environment that will destroy components if you do not actively protect against it. Nevertheless, the Bike Lab can advise on corrosion-resistant maintenance products specific to Florida conditions.
